Birds & More. The Mohican Lodge offers some of the most spectacular and rewarding birding in North Central Ohio. From eagles to loons to woodpeckers, take a short hike along a paved path for a wonderful start to the day. Path is less than 1 mile. Bring binoculars or borrow them from us!

 

Welcome Reception; Meet Our Wildlife Ambassadors; Be sure to sign up for our mailing list. Raffle held for many donated items.

Registration for special or additional activities will only be announced at the Welcome Reception and Keynote Presentation so you don't want to miss it!

8pm Batty About Bats with Merrill Tawse. Each evening from miles around, bats travel to the covered bridge area of Mohican State Park to forage for food. Participants should dress for cooler temperatures, bring flashlights, and meet at the covered bridge. This program will be canceled in case of rain or high winds. Mohican State Park

Goodness Snakes Alive! with Steve McKee. Snakes may be cold-blooded, but you don't have to break out in a cold sweat around snakes. Come and learn about local snakes, one of nature's finest predators and overcome your fears.

 

Birding Boat Tours Enjoy a guided pontoon boat ride on the Clearfork Reservoir. Your pilot will glide along the coastline looking for waterfowl and nesting eagles. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased in advance at OBS. Seating is limited to 9 per boat.

 

Falconry Demonstration A member of the Ohio Falconry Association will speak about the history and sport of falconry. Weather permitting. A demonstation will follow the presentation.

10am Historical Malabar Walk. The area where Malabar Farm is located was a bustling settlement in the 1800s. Take a walk with a naturalist to explore the areas where this settlement was located and learn of the infamous characters who populated this area. Malabar Farm State Park

Scatology. Most big furry animals are rarely seen because they are nocturnal or they run away from people. We know they are here because of what they leave behind; we find signs. We can learn many things from scat. Let's take a closer look at what most folks wouldn't want to.

Activities. Ashland County Park District volunteers will be on hand. Fishing at the pond weather permitting (bring your pole!); nature crafts and hands-on activities; Native American crafts and skills; arrowheads; dog and bird demonstrations; animal pelts to touch and identify; and more!

Malabar Farm State Park
12pm-2pm Makin' Tracks. Predators are part of the picture. Some of that picture can be looked at from signs they leave behind in their habitat such as tracks. Come and join us to take a look at some tracks of predators and make a plaster track of your favorite animal hunger. This program is sure to be a little messy! 12pm-5pm Back to the Wild. In this presentation, you will see several live hawks, owls, and a bald eagle. There will also be a live flying squirrel, salamanders, a toad, several native snakes and other wildlife related artifacts. $2 per person for 10 years of age and over. Wolf Creek Pine Run Grist Mill
12pm Pokin in the Pond for Predators! Join Merrill Tawse at the pond to see who is catching whom. A hands-on program to follow life and death in the pond. Gorman Nature Center

The Praying Mantis - an insect with an attitude. Many insects prey on other insects for a living, but none with more panache than the Mantis. And they don't stop with insects! Join Jan Ferrell to learn more about the fascinating life of the Praying Mantis.

Insect Edibles. While eating insects is not rare throughout the world; it is unusual in North America. Come and find out why some people think eating insects can help the world. Samples and recipes will be available. Warning: could be gross!

7pm-10pm Barn Dance. Join us for a fun family evening of square dancing. Experienced and beginner dancers welcomed. Featuring the Backporch Swing Band. Food and refreshments will be available for sale by the Ohio Bird Sanctuary Junior Naturalists. Malabar Farm Main Barn

10am-11am Skins and Skulls. Come and take a quiz on mammals. See how good you are at identifying animals found in Ohio. Find out some interesting facts about the life histories of animals we share our surroundings with. Mohican State Park Resort Lobby

Wildflowers & More. This is the best time of year for spring wildflowers. Mohican State Park offers some of the best flora and fauna in the state. This is a two mile hike and will be muddy. A shuttle will take us back to the start. You may want to bring or borrow binoculars. Warning: sure to be inspiring!
